Historical Meme

Well, Shaunesay posted the Historical Meme on her blog and I decided it sounded like a fun way to occupy 30 minutes or so.

The Meme calls for you to put your birthday into Wikipedia, then list 4 events, 3 births, 2 deaths, and 1 holiday/festival that is observed on that day.

Events:
1551 - National University of San Marcos, the oldest university in the Americas, is founded in Lima, Peru.
1937 - Coronation of King George VI of Britain at Westminster Abbey.
1965 - The Soviet spacecraft Luna 5 crashes on the Moon.
1975 - Mayagüez incident: the Cambodian navy seizes the American merchant ship SS Mayaguez in international waters.

Births:
1812 - Edward Lear, British author and poet (d. 1888)
1845 - Gabriel Fauré, French composer (d. 1924)
1937 - George Carlin, American comedian (d. 2008)

Deaths:
1856 - Jacques Philippe Marie Binet, French mathematician (b. 1786)
1970 - Nelly Sachs, German writer, Nobel Prize laureate (b. 1891)

Holiday or Festival:
International Nurses Day, commemorating the birthday of Florence Nightingale in 1820.

It was difficult to pin this down to just the number prescribed in the meme. For example, I was surprised to find that the three persons identified as being born the same day and year as me were all three performers—two actors and one rock musician. And, I can't resist pointing out that John Cadbury, English chocolate entrepreneur died on the date of my birth in 1889.

So, if you're a history or trivia or Wikipedia buff, feel free to use this meme on your own blog.
