A love of reading

Yesterday would have been my father's 90th birthday. As I was posting to my reading blog over the weekend, I got to thinking about my love of books and the pleasure I get from reading. And it all seems to go back to my parents.

Both Mother and Daddy enjoyed reading and our house was filled with books. They were also eclectic readers. We received magazines in the mail: Reader's Digest, Guidposts, Ladies' Home Journal, and others. Daddy loved comic books and he shared them with us. They read mysteries, science fiction, literature, whatever. For a while, they even subscribed to the Reader's Digest Condensed Books.

Since we lived in a very small town in rural Alabama, there were no bookstores. I do remember buying Little Golden Books and comic books at the Woolworth store. Our family did, however, make pretty good use of the public library. And, we took advantage of the occasional trip to Montgomery or Birmingham to visit a real bookstore and stock up.
